While state environmental regulations require dikes around oil storage tanks to contain a spill from a single tank, there are no safeguards against spills from multiple tanks.
Another intentional oil spill has occurred in McKean County. This time the quantity of crude oil spilled is smaller than the spill which devastated several waterways last month. The latest incident of a deliberately caused spill comes less than three weeks after a Bradford father and son allegedly intentionally opened valves on 20 storage tanks owned by Snyder Brothers, Inc. of Kittanning, their former employer, releasing 45,000 gallons of crude oil. More than one-third of the crude oil made its way into the nearby northern branch of Chappel Fork, Indian Run and Chappel Bay on the Allegheny Reservoir, killing thousands of fish, several beavers and other aquatic life. State police in Mount Jewett said on Thursday that the latest incident took place between 11 a.m. on Aug. 29 and 7:20 a.m. on Sept. 2.
