Cuomo defends partial return of Harvey Weinstein money

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he is only giving away just $50,000 of the total campaign contributions he's collected from disgraced Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein because the rest of the money has already been spent.

At an event on Long Island Thursday, the Democratic governor said he gave the money he got for his 2018 gubernatorial run to women's charities.

He called it "the right symbol," but said politicians should focus more on women's issues instead of Weinstein and his donations.

Cuomo reports receiving over $110,000 in donations from the alleged serial harasser for his previous campaigns for governor and attorney general.

State Republican Party spokeswoman Jessica Proud says the partial return sends a bad message to women and victims.

Weinstein has denied any nonconsensual sexual activity.
