Norman E. Bowen

Norman E. “Nubby” Bowen, age 86, of West Main Street, Westfield died Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Absolut Care of Westfield, following a brief illness.

Mr. Bowen was born on August 12, 1921 in Ripley, NY, the son of the late Ervin and Mary (Hayner) Bowen.

Norm served in the US Army from 1942 to 1946 with the 10th Armored Division, 55th Armored Engineers in the European theater. Being proud of his Military service, he was a member of the 10th Armored “Tiger” Division Veterans Assoc.

Nubby was a Westfield resident most all his life, he had been employed by the former Nickel Plate Rail Road prior to beginning his career as a machinist of over 30 years working at Ajax / Renold, Inc. from 1952 until 1986. He had been a member of the Cascade Hose Co. of the Fire Dept. of Westfield, the Fire Department’s Emergency Squad and the Fire Police for many years.

Nubby was a 50 year member of the Loyal Order of Moose #118, a member of The Wm. P. Jackway VFW , Post 6764, the John W. Rogers American Legion Post 327, and the Westfield Fireman’s Exempt Assoc. all of Westfield. He was an accomplished wood worker and carpenter who built his own home and enjoyed continually improving and puttering around the house. He enjoyed vegetable gardening,

Mr. Bowen had coached the White Sox little league baseball team for several years and always enjoyed little league ball. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. He will be greatly missed by his beloved cat, Jack, known to everyone who ever visited the Bowen household.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Evelyn A. (Breads) Bowen whom he married on September 22, 1946 in Westfield, his daughter, Deborah (Curtis) Aldrich of DuBois, PA and his two sons, Marc N. (Dara Bergman) Bowen of Westfield, and Jeffrey A. (Terrie) Bowen of Jamestown, NY. Norman is further survived by his grandchildren, Dean P. Aldrich of Toledo, OH, Dana Aldrich of Clarion, PA, Joshua Bowen of Pittsburgh, PA Jacob Bowen of Westfield, Amanda, Johanna and Jared Bowen all of Jamestown, and his Great Granddaughter, Madeline Aldrich of Clarion, PA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Bowen and his sister Mabel Clute.

Friends may call at the MASON FUNERAL HOME, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, NY on Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 12 noon until 2 PM when an informal service will be held, which will be lead by his family and friends. Private burial will be in Union Cemetery.
