Mary Tichy, 88, of the Kortwright Road, Ashville, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017, at UPMC Chautauqua WCA.
She was the wife of George P. Tichy, whom she married June 14, 1947, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Corry, Pa. Together they've been residents of their Kortwright Road home since shortly after their marriage.
Mary was born March 21, 1929, in Sugar Grove, Pa., one of 14 children of the late Michael and Katie Horvath Brunecz. She was a member of the last graduating class of the former Lottsville High School in 1947.
Mary belonged to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Panama since its founding. She was a member and past president of the Altar & Rosary Society and served as a Eucharistic minister.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, family and church were most important to Mary. She was an avid fan of any and all of her grandchildren's events. She was well known for her baking and her family always looked forward to Sunday afternoon apple pie and chocolate chip cookies. She also enjoyed gardening.
In addition to her husband of 69 years, George, surviving are four daughters: Elizabeth (Robert) Sprankle of Lakewood, Irene (Jon) Anderson of Ashville, Phyllis (Glenn) Hamilton of Lakewood and Christine (David) Voorhis of Panama; as well as a nephew, Michael (Cynthia) Brunecz whom Mary helped raise and was like a son to her.
Also surviving are 13 grandchildren: Rob (Beth) Sprankle, Kim (Scott) Wise, Kait (Lucius) Curtis, Cinnamon Anderson, Andrew (Amanda) Anderson, Wendi (Phil McGrath) Hamilton-Nagy, Jeff Hamilton, Josh (Samantha) Hamilton, Melissa (Craig) Kaufman, Bryan (Dea) Voorhis, Amanda (John) Marengo, Dustin (FredaAnn) Voorhis and Angela (Elliot) Smith; and 17 great-grandchildren: Ashleigh, Nicole & Kelsey Nagy, Gregory & Justin Yuchnitz, Allena & AndeeLynn Anderson, Taya Curtis, Katherine & Liliana Sprankle, Tommy & Danny Wise, Kenna Kaufman, Lydia & Juliet Voorhis, Briella Marengo and Darian Loebe, with another great-grandson to arrive this June.
She was preceded in death by her 11 brothers: Mike, John, Joe, Steve, Frank, Andy, Jack, Louie, Martin, Peter and Carl Brunecz; and two sisters who died in childhood, Katie and Mary Brunecz.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12 in Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Panama. The Rev. Piotr Zaczynski will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery, Niobe.
The family received friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home.
