FINDLEY LAKE - Every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser and the best that you can hope for is winning a two-night stay at Fairway Suites in the Findley Lake Spring Fling Regatta.

The regatta, which was held on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., kicked off Memorial Day weekend in Findley Lake.

The top prizes were two nights at Fairway Suites at Peek n' Peak, a luxurious getaway in Clymer, and one night at the award-winning Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Findley Lake.

Kimberly Morrow of Erie, who won the grand prize, said the event "was very exciting. I'm going to share this (the two-night stay at Fairway Suites) with my husband and thank you to Findley Lake for hosting this. It's a fantastic event. We need to get more people to come next year."

Renita and Derek McBride of Erie participate in the regatta for the enjoyment of being on the lake. "This had to be the calmest it's been, ever, ever, ever," Renita said. "It was like glass. So many people were out on their decks waving. It's so nice to see everybody."

The rules of the regatta are simple. Only non-motorized boats are permitted, for example, kayaks, paddle boats, row boats and canoes. Around the lake are 10 stations where boats stop and receive a playing card. At the end of the event, the person with the best poker hand wins the grand prize. The next highest hand wins second prize and so on down the line.

This year two contestants returned with hands of five kings. However, Morrow had higher off cards than Ryan Hawkins, so she won the two-night stay at Fairway Suites and he received the certificate to stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Nancy Holtz won the Krasa's Kove basket, and Mandy Bump and Jim Riley each won a three-hour adventure climbing experience at Peek n' Peak Resort.

The event was hosted by Katie and Nick Krasa, owners of Krasa's Kove ice cream parlor and restaurant. All proceeds will go to benefit the Findley Lake Chamber of Commerce, of which the Krasas are president and vice-president.

Katie said that Nick came up with the idea for a regatta during a Chamber of Commerce meeting. "We were trying to come up with events we hadn't tried before," she said. "We wanted to bring people in and let them see what the lake has to offer. So we thought: 'What better way to do that than to get them on the lake?'"

This is the second year for the Regatta. Last year the event took place on a warm, sunny day and about 100 boats took part. Only 37 watercraft participated this year, but this was probably because the weather was much cooler, although the lake was very calm, Katie said.

Nonetheless, the Krasas were pleased with the event. "I'm happy. We brought some new people into town," Katie said. "Our goal with the regatta has always been to bring people in and show them the lake."

Nick noted that a variety of watercraft took part in the event. In addition to many kayaks, there were at least a half-dozen paddle boats and five canoes, he said.

After the regatta, participants and spectators alike were invited to visit Brigadoon Restaurant until 4 p.m. for special prices on craft beer during a "tap-takeover." During this time, representatives from Mazza's Five and 20 Spirits and Brewing in Westfield "commandeered" the taps at the restaurant and replaced the usual brew with some of their own.

All prizes were donated by local businesses and organizations Donors include the Findley Lake Chamber of Commerce, Our Own Candle Company, Findley Lake Fashions, Krasa's Kove, The Secret Cubby, Fairway Suites, Howard &Associates Real Estate, Holiday Inn Express and Suites, Peek'n Peak resort, Paradise Bay campground, Findley Lake Fire Dept. The Blue Heron Inn, The Nostalgia Shoppe, Pine Junction restaurant and Brigadoon restaurant.
